Free Spool bags R1 000 grand prize

Anglers brave the cold to battle for grand prize.

The much anticipated start of the Natal Fresh Water Angling Association season took place this past Sunday at Richgate Park, Chelmsford Dam.

The expectant anglers were greeted by icy cold weather and misty early morning conditions.

Most of the clubs were well represented and anglers were eager to get the season started on a good note. At the crack of dawn, lines were cast out with an array of different bait combinations used to try and lure the fish to the hook.

The fish were however more elusive than ever and catches were minimal.

Anglers moved from one spot to the next, hoping to at least bag a solitary weighable fish but this was not to be for most.

There were many disappointed faces at the weigh-in and only 10 out of approximately 130 anglers caught weighable fish. It was also interesting to note that no angler caught more than one fish.

Itec Free Spool accumulated 11 points to finish eventual winners on the day; they were followed by Dannhauser and Glencoe on 2 points each.

David Carolissen of Itec Free Spool Angling Club was the angler of the day with his 2.105kg carp, he scored the most points for the day and his carp was the heaviest of the day.

The heaviest barbel was a specimen of 980g caught by Dan Mohanram of Chelmsford Angling Club.

The sponsor for the first round of the league was J&S Freight Haul who put up R1000 for the winning team.

This concept of offering incentives for each round of the league has resulted in clubs registering new members and strengthening their squads.

The winner’s cheque was presented to Itec Free Spool at the dam straight after the weigh-in. The second round of the NFWAA league will take place on 23 August at Sanford Islands, Chelmsford Dam.

The winners of the 2014/2015 league season were also presented with their trophies and prizes.
