A rose among the thorns

Maryna Janse van Rensburg joined the Newcastle Wrestling Club last year as a means to stay fit.

She soon found she had a natural aptitude for the sport.

She recently participated in the South African Cadetts Championship, in Johannesburg where she won a bronze medal.

“Winning a bronze was in itself a prestige and I would like to go for my South African colours and compete overseas.”

“Being the only girl in the club, I think the boys have helped me become a bit tougher, as I have fallen hard during some practice sessions.”

While Maryna has learned to display her dominance on the mat, it was more than the love for the sport that kept her going back for more.

“I really enjoy wrestling as I get to mix with a lot of people, and I am not so shy any more. I would really encourage other girls to join.”
