Burnt End
The first of the new season’s club competitions, the men’s and ladies’ trips were completed last weekend.
With only three female teams entered, a round robin format was held, with the only team to win both games, Joan Schoon, Eleen Roux and Diana Cronje annexing the title, with Michele Steele, Marie Botha and Carien Coetzee in second place.
Seven men’s teams participated and played in a knock-out format.
In the semi-final games, Douglas Steele, Gert Roos and Trevor Vincent just edged out Stephen Shaw, Colin Brodrick and Adrian van der Merwe, while the team of Lou Roux, Graham Robinson and Johan Coetzee narrowly beat Shaun Rheeder, Michael Baasden and Anil Durgadin.
In the final, Douglas’s team recorded a 14-11 victory to walk away with the trips title.
The monthly FedAuto meat competition was unfortunately washed out by the welcome rain.
Vryheid Bowling Club hosted its annual spring tournament last weekend.
The Newcastle team of Fritz Botha, Marie Botha, Trevor Hutchinson and Sue Hutchinson were leading the tournament going into the last round, but were pipped in the last game, still finishing as creditable runners-up behind Russel Morgan’s Richards Bay team.
