Dundee Bowling Club hosted its annual Friedman Cup tournament last weekend.
This is one of the longest running competitions in the country, and was supported by a record entry of 38 teams from all over KwaZulu-Natal.
The Friedman Cup (men only section) was contested by many current provincial players, and bowling of an extremely high standard was witnessed.
KZN Country Bowls’ Phillip Scheepers, Miskiet Ferreira, Dion Leiaty and Hogart Gevers (32+47) were the deserved winners, followed by Kevin Williams and team from Pietermaritzburg (29+13), and Des Hean and team from Stella Park Bowling Club in Durban (27+23).
The ladies and mixed teams competed for the Bill Douthwaite and Bill Bunger Memorial trophy, which was won by Ruan Victor and team from Durban Bowling Club, with Jill Hackland’s Umhlali team second and Mally Hean’s Stella Park team third.
Playing at Estcourt Bowling Club in a trips competition, Monty Steele, Michelle Steele and Aspen Shaw did well to only drop one of their five games, to finish third in the gold section, while Stephen, Samantha and Denva (only seven years old) were winners of the bronze section.
The overall event was won by VJ Singh’s team from Klipbank Club in Ladysmith.
A number of club competitions are due to take place in the next few weeks, and members are reminded to keep an eye on the notice board.
