The Newcastle Futsal League has kicked off with tenacity, as 12 registered teams fight for the top spot.
The league officially began on January 10. In the lead is Africa Football Club, with Newcastle United in second place.
Newcastle United showed substantial consistency and now has its sights set on knocking Africa FC off the top of the log.
Galatasaray is in third place, which guarantees fierce competition as its star striker, Thabo Zulu, is currently the highest goal scorer in the league, with five goals to his name.
Despite Africa FC, Newcastle United and Galatasaray’s ranking on the log, Catalans FC is still the league favourite, although the team lost 2-0 to Bayern Munich and 2-0 to Newcastle.
Barcelona FC began the league on shaky legs, after losing 5-0 to Galatasaray and 3-0 to Africa FC.
Dortmund drew 1-all with Manchester United. Dortmund, however, struggled to secure a much needed win against Africa FC and lost 5-0.
The next set of matches will take place on February 7 at 6.50pm at the Paradise Futsal Courts.
On the night, Dortmund will be facing Beyern Munich. This match will be followed by Wimbledon FC against Esperanza FC and Barcelona versus Manchester City.
Registrations are still open for individuals or teams to join the league. Contact Terence Chetty on 076 618 5486 or Spencely Perumal on 074 916 2360.
