Newcastle bowlers enjoy the rub of the bowling green at South African Championships

Newcastle bowlers again acquitted themselves well in the recent South African Championships played in Johannesburg.

In the Pairs competition, Trevor Smale paired up with former Newcastle Bowling Club member, Robert Mallinson to win their section before being narrowly beaten by another former member, Fanus Viviers and partner in the play-offs.

Similarly, John and Trevor Douthwaite also won their section, only to be beaten on the last head of their play-off game.

The KZNCB (KwaZulu-Natal Country Bowls) District was well represented in the championships, with Morgan Mavango and Wilson Mnchunu from The Nest Bowling Club winning the Pairs competition.

The club Pro 10 competition was played last weekend, with 14 teams vying to qualify for the regional play-offs to be held in Mtunzini later in the year.

Going into the last round, a number of teams were still in contention, but in the end Section 1 was won by Sid Price and Anil Durgadin (383 points) followed by Mike Martens and Colin Brodrick (364 points) and Koos Cilliers and Lukas Niemand (362 points).

Section 2 was won by Ron and Alice Howe (383 points) followed by Fritz and Marie Botha (365 points) and Lou and Elena Roux (360 points).

A number of Newcastle bowlers travel to Richards Bay this weekend to play in the Inter Zone competition between the Midlands, Northerns and Zululand zones.
