Cyclists reep the wins at the 100km Checkers and Pines Cycle Cahllenge

The race kicked off from the The Pines (HJ van Eck Drive) as cyclists made their way on the N11 to Utrecht and back again.

SUNNY RIDGE – Cycling enthusiasts, young and old from across Newcastle and surrounding areas got up at the crack dawn to compete in the much anticipated annual 20km and 100km Checkers and The Pines Cycle Challenge on Sunday(May 21).

Cyclists competed in the following divisions:

20km:

– Boys Under 11

– Boys Under 13

– Girls Under 13

– Boys Under 15

– Boys Under 17

100km:

– Elite Under 23

– Jnr Men’s

– Ladies 100km

– Veterans 30 – 39 years

– Veterans 40 – 49 years

– Veterans 50 years and older

The race kicked off from the The Pines (HJ van Eck Drive) as cyclists made their way on the N11 to Utrecht and back again.

Road Traffic Inspectors (RTI) as well as stationed officers patrolled the route, ensuring the safety of cyclists.

Prize money was up for grabs in the various divisions, and three lucky winners could win great prizes in a raffle.

Supporters, family and friends who attended the event were treated to refreshments while their significant others competed in the challenge, and a jumping castle kept the children entertained.
