Little district puts up a fight and wins the tournament
The final result was the Midlands men and women both winning and their combined points put them on top with 100 plus
What a fantastic weekend the Midlands bowlers have just had!
32 bowlers travelled to Richards Bay to play in the Inter-Zone Tournament.
Most of them booked into a B&B called The Gecko that is very close to the bowling club and were treated to first-class accommodation; the hospitality was superb. A huge thanks to Jaco, the owner – to be inundated with all these bowlers and to keep smiling is some achievement. Some of the bowlers were home hosted and many thanks to these people who opened their homes to make sure their visitors were well taken care of.
The bowlers left Ladysmith, Harrismith and Bergville on Friday with all the extra clothing due to the weather forecast predicting rain and cold spells for most of the weekend.
Well, not surprisingly, the weather on Saturday morning was mild with a very small amount of drizzle and then the sun came out. For the rest of the two days, it was perfect bowling weather – only on Sunday did the wind blow quite hard, but not gale force. What more could the bowlers ask for!
The Inter-Zone is between Zululand, Northerns and Midlands. Each zone enters four ladies’ teams and four men’s teams, all with four players. On Saturday, two games of 18 ends were played. The format was three sets of six and one point for every set, with two points for a win. At the end of the first day, both Midlands ladies and men were on top with 56 points, followed by Zululand on 32 points and Northerns on 31 points.
They just needed to keep it up on Sunday.
Sunday was two games of 15 ends, with three sets of five. Zululand came out with guns blazing – they were not going to let this little district come and show them up on their own home greens, but this little district was not going down without a fight and boy they did just that. The final result was the Midlands men and women both winning and their combined points put them on top with 100 plus, followed by Zululand with 60 plus points. So to all of you who read the write-up last week and wished all the bowlers good luck, thanks very much – it worked!
A list of names will go up on the notice board showing all the Midland bowlers who have been selected for trials in August, to try and get selected to play in the Provincial sides. Congratulations to all those bowlers – best of luck and good bowling in August.
