Senior bowlers advance to playoffs

Vryheid Bowling Club hosted the Northern Zone Senior Fours competition two weeks ago.

The six men’s teams were divided into two teams of three, with a cross-section format then being used.

At the end of the day after each team had played three games, the section winners were: Sid Price, Koen Pretorius, Phil Connelly and Bert Rodgers (4 + 13) and the team of John Douthwaite, Billy Nicholas, Mike Martens and Colin Brodrick (6 + 28).

Both teams now travel to Zululand for the KwaZulu-Natal Country Bowls (KZNCB) playoffs.

A poor entry of only two teams in the women’s section has seen these teams automatically going through to the playoff, one from Vryheid and one from Dundee.

The monthly FedAuto meat competition was played with a reduced field due to the 12 seniors away on district duty in Vryheid.

An enjoyable afternoon was had by all and first prize was won by Douglas Steele, Sue Hutchinson, Simon Ball and Alex Zaal (10 + 19), with the second prize going to the team of Trevor Hutchinson, Michelle Steele, Tara Hartman and Nesta Viljoen (10 + 13).

Cold and blustery conditions did not deter the bowlers participating in the KZNCB Fours playoffs at the weekend, hosted by Mahawane Bowling Club in Volksrust.

The women’s section went down to the wire as going into the last game, one team had six points and four others had four points, the last games thus being the deciders.

Barbara Baleri’s Klipbank side won its last game to end on eight points plus 23 to take the title, while Rita Meyer’s Empangeni side did likewise, ending on six plus 26 to finish as runner up.

Newcastle’s Alice Howe, Dorothy Crosbie, Sue Hutchinson and Lindsay McArthur finished third (4 + 13).

The men’s section was also close, with all six teams having lost at least one game going into the final round.

Newcastle’s Sid Price, Trevor Smale, Ernie Phillips and Anil Durgadin maintained their earlier momentum to win the last game and finish on eight points plus 25, running out deserved winners of the championship.

They were followed by Theuns Fraser’s team from The Nest (6 + 35) and Harrismith’s Andre Vivier and team in third place (6 + 15).

All members are requested to take note of the nomination list on the club notice board for the new NBC committee, to be elected at the AGM on July 22.
