Farmers enjoy a ‘smooth’ win at the Oval
The Farmer's team brought along their own set of hardware - a sander, sandpaper and hammers
One would never think that the genteel sport of cricket and the serious man’s business of D.I.Y. could ever mix.
However, since the notorious Cape Town test match, the two are now synonymous.
The sandpaper incident where Australian fielder, Cameron Bancroft, was seen on international television surreptitiously (or as he thought) sanding the one side of a cricket ball to give it swing, will be forever etched (or is that sanded?) into the minds of cricket lovers everywhere.
Steve Smith, the Aussie captain, his vice David Warner – the two who allegedly masterminded the sandpaper plot – and of course, Bancroft, have all been sent packing back home to Australia where Smith and Warner broke down in tears as they apologised for their cheating.
A sad time for anyone who believes in fair play – a virtue that cricket has long prided itself as the characteristic that sets it apart from the brutal sports of rugby and football.
It was with this in mind that local cricketers decided to take a s(t)and too.
The Farmers versus Brothers 20 over game at the Oval on Wednesday took another twist when Woesie Bruyns and his Farmer’s team brought along their own set of hardware – a sander, sandpaper and hammers. And, no, these were not for use on the field but a way of highlighting that cricketers will never settle for the kind of behaviour seen at Newlands.
“One must always see the humorous side too,” said Woesie, “but the DIY stuff we bought was all for a good cause as we donated it to the Adult Centre once we were done!”
As for the game at the Oval – batting first Farmers made 174/5 with Joff Davies notching up 77 and Chris Rosewall weighing in with 30. Batting second, Brothers could only make 115/5 in their 20 overs.
