BBAC gets new spark

The club have committed to tweaking their training methods and changing their mindset to ensure that BBAC continues to grow from strength to strength

Athletes from the Biggarsberg Athletics Club (BBAC) may not have branded running gear, or special diets and training plans or even supplement cocktails, but what they do have is a passion for running.

And it was their passion that recently impressed the team at Bodypulse SA.

Lindani Sangweni, Bongani Sabelo, Thokozani Phungula and Joel Khumalo recently underwent Electro Muscle Stimulation (EMS) training in Bryanston. After the last race in Newcastle, where BBAC athletes once again impressed, Lani van der Mescht saw the huge potential they possessed and wanted to do more for them.

She started asking around if anyone could assist them with sports nutrition and found a friend, who happened to specialise in it. Janitra Dookhi, a former Dundonian, originally started EMS training to help her shape up and strengthen her body for Comrades.

After meeting Shayne Hollenberg, who also had a passion for health and fitness, the duo quit their jobs and purchased the Bodypulse SA business.

It was there were the four BBAC athletes underwent EMS training. For the guys, it was a totally new experience, being hooked up to machines which monitored their performances.

The feeling of electricity stimulating their muscles was also a foreign feeling and took some getting used to. However, in the first ten minutes, they could see a 10% improvement as their muscles grew stronger.

Janitra and Shayne were so impressed with the athletes and their natural talent. Inspired by the whole experience, Lani has decided to implement strength training every Thursday at the club. The club have committed to tweaking their training methods and changing their mindset to ensure that BBAC continues to grow from strength to strength and breezes by the competition at future events.
