What a fun-filled, festive, final evening for the De Franca’s Spar Business League!

The weather held off; it just got rather dark earlier, so a few teams had to finish their games more by feel, as the jack became very difficult to see.

Eventually, everyone was off the greens and standing around the braais cooking the meat and quenching their thirst.

Once everyone had their food and refreshments, prize-giving commenced.

The results were: Most bowls played (sportsmen) went to De Franca’s Tops. The B section runners-up were an all men’s team from The Shute, who managed to railroad themselves to almost the top spot, but sadly, Nambithi General Services went through the seven weeks and slowly exterminated all the opposition to come out winners of the B section.

Well done to all the teams and we hope you will be back in October to exact your revenge.

There was a bit of a battle in the A section, with the top five teams all being very close.

Marmag went into the final game top of the leader board, but it appears that their chemical cleaning strategy didn’t wash away their opposition as they had hoped and they ended up third overall.

Paddy’s Diesel was lying third going into their final game and had to beat Motor Factors, who had the same score, so they revved their diesel engines, added some turbo boost and set off on their final journey in the hopes that the engines would not fail and they would have to end their journey on the back of a flat-bed being towed over the finish line. Lucky for them, the team worked like a newly-serviced vehicle and they ended up second overall.

The team that had no breakdowns and only suffered a few punctures on the way due to having the correct tread and air pressure, and rolled over the finish line to win this section, was Neal’s Tyres.

This team was lying second at the start of the final game and the four-wheel-drive tyres just flattened all efforts to stop them. So if you want to be a winner, just pop into Neal’s Tyres and let them fit the right tread.

Sunday saw The Nest host the annual Midlands Fund-raiser Tournament and as usual, Stewart and Shelly pulled out all the stops with their hospitality to give the bowlers a great day of bowls.

They even seemed to organise the weather, which was perfect – slightly overcast with occasional slight drizzle, but good enough to play three games of 14 ends.

Now an awful lot of these bowlers have been watching the Commonwealth Games, where South Africa had sent their Lawn Bowls teams to participate, and these games were discussed at great length during the course of the day.

Having watched teams from all the different countries and how all the different players delivered their bowls, or stood on the mat, etc, you can imagine that we now had our own Commonwealth Games taking place at The Nest.

Okay, so we had no television coverage or spectators, but the noise made from the bowlers themselves made up for this. Some teams South Africa would have been proud of… As for some other teams, it is alas back to the drawing board.

All that can be said is that every bowler left with a smile on their face and a very enjoyable day was had by all.
This Wednesday will see the start of the Tabs-In League again and please, everybody is welcome.

It will start at 5.15pm and the floodlights will be on, so hopefully we should be able to see the other end of the green.

Once again, this is a fun event, but there are cash prizes at the end.

Lastly, do not forget supper on Friday evening, to be provided by Emma van Deventer. Rod is also supposed to help Emma, but that we would like to see. Come along and enjoy a really good meal!
