Rural horse racing in Dundee and in the province received a major boost this week with the donation of a valuable Standard-bred trotting stallion to the rural horse racing community.
Dean Latimer, director of Ithotho (Pty) Ltd, the donor company, one of two licensed racecourse operators in KZN, was in Dundee this week for the hand-over, and explained that the strategy behind the donation was to assist transformation of the horse racing industry via upgrade of the genetic pool in the rural equine herd.
“Die Fledermaus, carrying 100% imported European and American trotting genes, will now be undertaking stud duties in Dundee,” he said. “He is by trotting champion Golden Tilly (SWE) out of the top race-mare Operett Swing (SWE).”
“We believe this will move rural racing to a higher standard of international acceptance and ultimately to earlier full commercialisation,” said Latimer.

As witnessed annually at the Dundee July horseracing festival, the trotting and pacing gaits are preferred to that of thoroughbred gallop racing. Infusion of this new imported blood is already taking the fledgling rural racing industry to new heights, with blooded Standardbred progeny winning races with ease.
Menzi Buthelezi was keen to proudly hold the new stallion and, on behalf of the Association expressed, extreme gratitude to Ithotho for their generous donation and involvement in the programme. The Dundee July is scheduled to take place on July 14.
