Gerald reigns supreme on the golf course

The club is gearing up for this week’s 50th anniversary of the opening of the golf course.

The Gee Jays will be performing on Friday evening, with a two-day golf competition and bowls tournament on Friday.

There was very little golf activity over the weekend, with the course being partially closed for the Club Matchplay Championships. The top 16 players from the Club Champs qualify to play in this event and the winner represents our club at the provincial championships to be played at Kloof Country Club later in the year.

The first round saw all going to plan, with the top players progressing to the next round, until Bheki Mbokazi (who is now known as the Black Assassin) upset the odds and the bookies by defeating Wayne Bentley.

The second round saw Bheki up against an in-form Gerald Boardman, but alas he could not pull two surprises off in one day and succumbed to an honourable defeat.

Enrico Bozza had two good victories over Jabulani Tshanini and Sifiso Mdluli to proceed to the semi-finals, where he would meet Gerald.

In the other half of the draw, Patrick Mbatha saw off a tough challenge from Ntokozo Cebekhulu, while Leon Petersen, after a shaky start and a stern talking to from his caddie, fought back to claim a memorable victory over Colin Woodall.

Sunday saw the Plate and Championship semi-finals being played, with Gerald carrying his good form over from Saturday in defeating Enrico. In the other match, Leon went walkabout against Patrick and received a rather harsh golf lesson in the process.

In the Plate semi-finals, Bheki received a bonus bye when Sifiso withdrew due to an injury, but Bheki claims Sifiso was too afraid to play against him.

The other game resulted in a win for Colin when he beat Ntokozo to book his place in the final.

The final produced a fantastic game, with Gerald and Patrick both playing superb golf and displaying skills that most of us can only dream about.

In the end, there has to be a winner and Gerald managed to hold off the determined challenge from Patrick to win on the seventh hole.

The plate final was a little more one-sided when Bheki could not find the pinpoint accuracy of Saturday and misfired badly (which is not the kind of trait you see in an assassin) and let his target, Colin, walk away with the Plate.

Well done to Gerald on your fine victory; you are truly a worthy winner of this title.

To Colin, not first prize, but well played on a fine win to take the Plate Trophy.
