An explosion of colour on the bowling rink at Ladysmith Country Club
It was a sight that surely needed shades, with the colourfully-attired bowlers out on the bowling rink looking much like there had been an explosion in a paint factory
With the club all decked out for the 50th Anniversary, the bowlers were the first to arrive and commandeer the attention of the kitchen and bar staff in expectation of a long, fun-filled day.
The services of the resident Midlands chief cigarette lighter were in huge demand, as the smokers lit up for their early-morning fix. Once the bowlers had finished doing whatever it was that got them started, they were gathered up by the good shepherd, Dr Livingston, and herded onto the rink.
The format for the fun day of bowls was two games of 15 ends, with a break after five ends to revitalise the system and the body.

14 eager captains and their teams rolled off the mat in the quest of the Holy Grail; that is victory.
The first round ended with seven teams creating a bottleneck at the top of the table, with the two Bergville sides, together with Veronica and Barbara’s squads, all winning with good shot differences and ends won.
Not to be outdone or that far behind, waiting in the shadows, were Bob Corringham, Craig Booth and the team of Price Tarr, all waiting to pounce.
Having had a fine halfway sponsored by Tugela Panelbeaters, the seven beaten teams took their panels back over the Tugela and left the serious business of knocking the dings and dents out of each other’s games to the top contenders.
The second round had Phil pitted against Veronica; Barbara taking on the other Bergville team; with the two Klipbank teams of Bob and Price trying to sort each other out in a real local derby.
They say the cream always rises to the top; well it certainly was the case with Phil Rooke, Gavin Moore and Debbie Moore who, playing wonderful bowls, took no prisoners and quietly went about the business of defeating a gallant Veronica and gang to finish on top of the pile.
Barbara Baleri and her band also had a good win, but could not hold off the charge off Bob Corringham and his raiders from pipping them into second place.
Well played to all who played, as well as to the fine spirit and quality of bowls that was on display throughout the day.
