ANGLING NEWS: Angling season concludes on a high note

The Angling Professional League (APL) ended its fourth season on a high note.

All registered members of the league were eligible to win lucrative prizes at the first APL Closed Competition, hosted at Sandford.

In the scaled category, Udien Govinder of Ladysmith Angling Club caught the heaviest carp, which weighed in at 2,48 kilogrammes.

He pocketed a neat R3 000.

In second place was Willie Smith of Stillwaters AC, followed by Talia Boodhoo (Stillwaters), Sarfraz Khan (Breakwaters AC) and Ebrahim Mia (Challengers AC).

Abdullah Paruk (Glencoe AC) took top honours in the non-scaled category.

He landed the heaviest barbel (2,93kg) and earned R3 000 as well, with the runners-up being Rafique Hoffese (Glencoe), Mohamed Mia (Challengers), Shakeel Sheik (Breakwaters) and Preetam Birbal (Breakwaters).

Currently APL title holders for the season include:

• Rishen Nankoo of Ladysmith holds the heaviest scaled fish (carp of 4,55kg), caught during the Grand Challenge
• Valentino Murugan of Ladysmith caught the heaviest non-scaled fish, an 11,4kg monster reeled in during League Three
• Abhay Jawair of Stillwaters is the Junior Angler of the Year with nine individual points
• Veruschka Boodhoo of Stillwaters is the Lady Angler of the Year with six points
• Dan Govinder takes the Senior Angler of the Year title, with 15 points
• Monty Slabbert of Breakwaters is the Angler of the Year on 53 points, with Kaveer Singh (Breakwaters) and Shane Mangaroo (Ladysmith) in second third respectively.

They each received angling tackle from the sponsors.

“Thank you to all our major sponsors, officials and members, as we take a well-deserved break after a gruelling season. The APL will host its AGM and prizegiving soon,” said APL management.

The new season already looked promising, with many new anglers set to join the APL fold and fish for the ultimate prize – glory.
