SPORTS NEWS: Local bowlers go it alone
Most pleasing was the entry of a number of newer bowlers, out to gain more experience in the game.
Newcastle Bowling Club staged its Singles Championships last weekend, which attracted a pleasing entry in both the men’s and women’s sections.

The 12 female bowlers were divided into four sections and after three rounds of play, the section winners were Eleena Roux, Dorothy Crobsie, Samantha Shaw and Joan Schoon.
The semi-final games were initially close affairs, with Eleena and Samantha then taking the lead, which they maintained to win their games against Dorothy and Joan respectively.
Eleena then maintained her good form to oust Samantha in an entertaining final, to be crowned the 2018 club singles champion.
The 10 section winners in the men’s division were Sid Price (making a welcome return to the greens after a long lay-off due to injury), Fritz Botha, Stephen Shaw, Trevor Moore, Marius Bouwer, Johan le Roux, Ron Howe, Tony de Pooter, Douglas Steele and Trevor Hutchinson.
The knock-out stages saw Sid beating Fritz and then being ousted by Stephen.
Marius beat Trevor, Ron beat Johan and Douglas edged out Trevor, before being edged out himself by Tony.

The semi-finals between Stephen and Marius, Ron and Tony will take place today, with the final to follow thereafter.
Club President, Koen Pretorius expressed his delight at the entries into the competition, and the positive spirit displayed by all club members.
