Contention on the bowling green at the weekend

Volksrust Bowling Club played host to the Northern Zone Men’s and Ladies’ Fours last weekend.

The 10 men’s teams were divided into three sections, with Trevor Hutchinson, Mike Hartman, Simon Ball and Trevor Moore (Newcastle) winning section A, Vryheid’s Phillip Scheepers and team winning section B and Sid Price, Koen Pretorius, Fritz Botha and Billy Nicholas winning section C.

The semi-final game between Trevor and Phillip’s teams proved to be a nail biter, with peels called with the last head to play.

With Vryheid lying two shots when the skips went to the head, Trevor played a purler to trail the jack into the ditch, to lie shot and game.

Phillip’s first bowl rolled into the ditch and Trevor’s final bowl did likewise.

Phillip’s last bowl managed to come to rest on the ditch board close to the jack however, and in doing so it won his team an exciting game and qualification for the final.

In the final, Phillip and team were quick off the mark and were soon in a 10 – 1 lead.

Sid and team managed to claw their way back into contention with the score at 12 – 15, before a couple of twos and threes saw Phillip’s team again gain the ascendancy and take the title.

The female section winners, Samantha Shaw, Michelle Steele, Lindsay Steele and Tara Hartman (Newcastle) and Hannelie Arndt’s Dundee team met in the final, which also proved to be a battle royale.

Dundee scored a four early in the game, but Samantha and team rallied to remain in contention throughout the game.

With the score at 13-all with the last head to play, Dundee managed to get the shot on a measure, and in doing so lifted the trophy.

All four finalists now travel to Richards Bay to play their counterparts from the Midlands and Zululand zones, to determine the KwaZulu-Natal Country Bowls winners.

The monthly FedAuto meat competition will take place this Saturday afternoon, and a good turnout is again anticipated for this popular outing.
