NKZN JKA excel excellently at National Championship

The JKA South African Championships were held at the Standard Bank Arena in Johannesburg on Friday (May 25) and Saturday (May 26).

According to NKZN JKA Head Sensei, Johan Swart, there were more than 3 800 participants from all over South Africa.

“The Northern KwaZulu-Natal JKA Region held extensive training sessions prior to this prestigious event, and it is with pride that we announce our outstanding achievements in both the Novice and Elite Divisions, with us bringing home 15 gold medals, 19 silver medals and 36 bronze medals. As always, the National Championships was a significant event, and being selected to represent our province (KZN) was an honour,” said Swart.

The top four karateka in each division also qualified for and were awarded their National colours and received a certificate as well.

However, it was only the Elite Division, comprising of Brown, Jr Black and Black Belts who were eligible to participate and represent South Africa in the JKA Africa Cup Championship, which will be held in Johannesburg on September 1.

“While JKA karate is a disciplined and serious sport, with NKZN JKA it is also fun and considered a “family affair” as so much time is spent together training and socialising. The team travelled together by bus where all the ‘first-timers’ were initiated. The juniors and seniors also learn to tolerate and respect each other, not only in their sport, but socially and culturally as well. On behalf of the management and karateka of NKZN JKA, we would like to thank the organisers and people behind the scenes who made this hugely successful event possible,” he concluded.
