GALLERY: ‘No turning back’ for Vryheid Athletics Club members at the Comrades

13 members of the VAC are taking part in this year’s down-run.

‘ASIJIKI’, no turning back, this is the slogan for this year’s Comrades Marathon and with months of preparation to back them up, participating Vryheid Athletics Club members agree.

This year, the race, described as the world’s greatest ultra marathon, takes place for the 93rd time.

Thirteen members of the VAC are taking part in this year’s down-run and the club hosted a warm ‘good luck’ ceremony for them on Thursday last week.

Excitement was in each of the participant’s minds and not one spoke of being nervous.

“I’m not nervous at all, just really wishing it was here already. I wouldn’t even mind if it was this coming Sunday,” said VAC member, Hugo Burger, with a laugh.

These locals are among the 20 000 runners that took off from Pietermaritzburg City Hall headed for Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Good luck to Sabelo Ndlovu, Simphiwe Buthelezi (42594), Bongani Msimango, Mandla Mnisi (24637), Jabulani Ndwandwe (26547), Ntokozo Mbatha, Prishantha Anandlal (18518), Roshen Anandlal (2897), Dirk Breedt (6367), Hein Potgieter (24032), Richard Scheepers (9293), Melissa Scheepers (9294) and Hugo Burger (20626).
