Newcastle Harriers athletes in it for the long haul
The pick of the Harriers athletes was Mthokozisi Dlamini, who completed the gruelling road race in eight hours, 21 minutes and 22 seconds.
Local athletes put their feet down at this year’s Comrades Marathon.
Vernon van der Merwe of Newcastle Harriers said the ultramarathon went well, with a few of his clubmates recording excellent times.
Van der Merwe was unfortunately not among the finishers.
“However, the race was well organised and finishing at Moses Mabida Stadium was a great experience.”
The pick of the Harriers athletes was Mthokozisi Dlamini, who completed the gruelling road race in eight hours, 21 minutes and 22 seconds.

Fritz Olivier finished in 9:27:33.
Marius Jooste completed his Comrades Marathon in 10:43:11, followed by Lizette Kock in 10:58:09 and Braam van Zyl in 11:07:18.
Newcastle City Athletics Club also recorded some stellar times.
The best of the bunch was Phakamani Zulu in a speedy 7:48:47, followed by Njabulo Mthethwa in a time of 8:30:55 and Bongumusa Gubevu in 8:41:01.
Next to finish from the club was Lungelo Mkhize in 9:16:31.
Jacob Bhanda completed the race in 10:10:00, Bonginkosi Shabalala recorded a time of 10:19:50 and Linda Madonsela finished in 10:30:29.
The first female finisher for City was Zandile Zwane in 11:11:05.
Also finishing sub-11 hours were Sbusiso Ngwenya (11:11:33), Buhle Gumbi (11:14:59), Mndeni Mohlakoana (11:32:10), Nhlakanipho Mthembu (11:36:19) and Kwazi Seyama (11:49:59).
