Conrad hooks a massive Musselcracker for the Enforcer crew
Conrad Gerber caught his first Black Musselcracker at the competition and it was certainly a whopper, weighing in at 26.90kg and earning him first place in the Heaviest Bottom Fish category.
THREE full days of phenomenal fishing took place in Port Edward as a total of 40 members and private skippers took part in the SAPS Deep Sea Angling Provincial Championships from May 20 to May 26.
Nine ski boats entered the championship and among them was Enforcer, with five crew members aboard, including Skipper Peter Anderson, anglers, Ant Nel, Conrad Gerber, Flippie Malan and Nico ‘Sarge’ Malan. Martin van der Merwe, who was not aboard the Enforcer, was the assistant. Conrad Gerber, from Vryheid, and Flippie Malan are members of the provincial angling team, along with Sarge Malan as a reserve angler on the team. Only three bottom fishing anglers and three game fishing anglers are selected to represent SAPS KZN during nationals.
The total number of fish weighed in at the competition was 113, with a total weight of 608.30kg being brought to the scale for the duration of the championship.
The scales closed on the Friday afternoon at 1pm and the prizegiving ceremony was held later that evening at 6pm at the Marlin Ski Boat Club in Port Edward as the achievements of the anglers who took part were acknowledged.
With a massive lead of 110 points ahead of the second place boat, the Enforcer took the trophy for Best Boat Overall with 206 points in total, as well as first place for the Best Bottom Boat Overall with 41 points.

Conrad Gerber caught his first Black Musselcracker at the competition and it was certainly a whopper, weighing in at 26.90kg and earning him first place in the Heaviest Bottom Fish category ahead of crew mate, Flippie Malan who came in second with his 23.35kg Black Musselcracker for the Enforcer crew. Gerber also took the prize for Heaviest Bottom Bag and came in a close second in the Best Anglers category with 51 points to his name, a single point off the winning total of 52, which went to D Dhanarajan. Flippie Malan came in third, behind Gerber, with 49 points.
In the Private Person Section, Ant Nel took top spot in the Best Angler category, with 45 points, as well as first place for the most fish weighed in for the week with seven fish to his name on the scales.
