There’s no accounting for some

The club has, like some of the football played, seen a slow start to the World Cup.

There have been some subdued times, which one can equate to a dull and boring draw, while there has been the odd frenzied nights of activity and excitement, much like Friday evening produced.

It was a great sport weekend for the old Empire, with those pesky Brits winning the cricket, tiddly winks, F1, soccer, kite flying and of course rugby.

Much like the Springboks were blown off the park at Newlands, the golfers who teed off later had to contend with some rather gusty and tricky conditions.
This weekend saw a close to full field take part in a new monthly mug sponsored day, by Willie Erasmus from Reyneke & Erasmus.

The partnership of Willie and David Reyneke was formed in 1981, when they opened an office in the then old United Bank building, where the ABSA auto tellers are now. In 1989, they moved their offices to a house at the end of Midblock Road, which is situated next to the new free parking lot behind the old Beares building.

David was very involved in the development and welfare of our town, with his work with the then municipality, and at one stage was elected mayor. Willie Erasmus is very much a local and is from the farming area of Wasbank.

Willie decided that although he loved farming, he needed to further his education, so he decided that accounting would be a good idea as it would assist him in knowing how many cattle the farm had.

So off he went and joined then Coopers & Lybrand (later to become PWC) as an articled clerk. He attended evening classes at Tukkies till he received his qualification.

He returned to his roots, Wasbank, and played his golf out of Dundee until he realised that the Ladysmith course was better, so he moved to town and joined the club. Willie has become an asset to the club, and his input and knowledge in accounting matters has been invaluable to the club.

One player who saw nothing strange in the neighbourhood or the golf course was Thokozane Dlalda, who won the ‘A’ Division on a very good 68 nett.

The ‘B’ Division was a lot more closely contested, with Leon Petersen finally putting a good round together and putting the ghosts of the past few weeks behind him, and Neal Singh both carding a net 69.

This was not good enough to win the ‘B’ Division, as Jan Pretorius managed to find a gateway to another dimension and ghost past them with a 68 net to win the division. Pam Sanders, who ain’t afraid of no ghosts, developed a high-tech game to capture the ‘C’ Division with an exceptional 65 nett.

For the rest of us, it was a case of trying to catch the ghost riders in the wind, and with not even a ghost’s chance of winning. Gerhard van der Westhuizen, who is as seldom seen as a ghost, bust the IPS with 39 points and Sipho Hlongwa took the best gross with a 71.

There were only three two-clubs, with Wayne Bentley, Phillip Boardman and Sipho Hlongwa sharing the spoils.

Nearest the pins and not winning any two-clubs were Enrico Bozza, Neal Singh and Kurt Swoboda with two. Max Pillay, probably one of our fittest members, had to be as he did the equivalent of another two Park Runs in the afternoon, and claimed the sucker for most golf.
