Young Irish terrier leads by example to skip victory

The last few weeks have seen some serious and social bowls action at the club, with the Ladysmith Wireless Solutions Trips and yet another round of Mick’s Rules taking place.
This has kept our bowlers rather quiet (except for he who shall remain nameless) and out of mischief.
The one thing that the bowling clubs of our district know how to do besides play bowls, is cater.
No matter which club one goes to play at, whether it be Bergville, Klipbank, Colenso, or our own, all the talk seems to be around the catering. Every now and again, someone will deviate from the topic and talk bowls, but he or she is quickly diverted back to the subject of the food.
Now don’t get me wrong, I think it is fantastic that the clubs can supply such high quality teas and lunches, with a bit of off field entertainment, for a price that one will never get from any establishment in the country.
The only drawback is that to qualify for this, ie cheap price, outstanding variety of food, snacks and entertainment, one has to throw a sort of round thing at a white thing for six hours or so.
The Ladysmith Wireless Solutions Trips went off very well and the hot shot team of Barbara, Liefie and Donovan pick-pocketed their way to a fine win.
It was so nice to see some of our own bowlers faces interspersed with their carefully selected teammates from Klipbank.
The round after the last round (nobody is quite sure what round we are paying) of Mick’s Rules was played the other Sunday. There were a number of young, keen and excited bowlers ready to take to the rink and show off their skills. This took the older regulars by surprise, as they are never keen or excited to leave the comfort of the lounge.
I have no idea of the results and can only say that the favourites started off very poorly, until they changed their skip for the second five ends.
The young Irish terrier, Stuart, took over as skip and leading by example, he instilled a bit of discipline and produced a game plan that the Springboks would have been happy with.
In the space of a mere five ends, he had turned the result upside down. William Shakespeare once said: “Some people are born to lead, while others are born to be led” or something like that, but according to Stuart: “Some are born to feed, but others are born waiting to be fed.”
Needless to say that both days were enjoyed by all who played and we look forward to the next Mick’s Rules on July 15.
