Fortune favours the old

Last weekend started off with a roaring Friday evening of wine, food and merriment, with over 30 meals being prepared and the thirsty patrons waiting for the ‘100 Club’ draw.

It was nice to see the “know so much cause they drink so much” night school faithful chatting around the bar, exposing all (or any who would listen) to their vast array of knowledge and useless general information.

The newly-formed bachelor club and invited guests were, as usual, there till the bitter end, discussing a vast range of topics from needlework to quantum physics.

In between all this, the draw was held, with a merry Merle Wessels collecting the main winnings and birthday boy Charles Porrill the consolation prize.

The Juana Maria Home for the Aged visited their nursery or feeder branch over the weekend, and held their annual awareness and fund-raising golf day at the club.

There were a number of candidates, in the sunset of their truly remarkable lives, who turned up to show their appreciation for the outstanding services that Juana Maria provides.

Juana Maria not only provides top class, affordable accommodation in a safe environment for the elderly of our town, but also has dedicated staff who care for them.

The committee and volunteers organise functions, various social events and entertainment throughout the year for the elderly to enjoy.

The more elderly (than some) members of our club could only sit back and admire the youthfulness and reckless play of our “junior” members, who showed little respect for us oldies and dominated the day’s play.

First up was the pairing of George Ashi and Murray Hume who, thanks to the go for broke and daredevil attitude of young George, led the way after nine holes.

It seemed so easy for George; almost as simple as playing Tiger Woods on a PlayStation.

Thank goodness for the most wise Murray who – with all his experience, knowledge and mastery of the game – managed to tame George’s wild, free-hitting spirit and kept him focused on the prize.

They ended up on 47 points, which is a very creditable score considering the windy conditions.

They were followed home by another senior-junior combination of Leon Petersen and Roy Gibbons.

It was again the cunning guile and stealth of the senior, Brother Leon, who managed to keep the big wild and woolly hitting Roy on the straight and narrow.

Third place also consisted of a similar combination of Andrea Sirchia and Aurette Boardman.

However, on this occasion, it was the clear-thinking, level-headed calmness of the much more youthful Aurette that helped keep the extravagant hitting of the industrious Italian under control.

There were five two-club winners in Trevor Jacobs, Murray Hume, Wayne Bentley, Corné Stevens and Leon Petersen. The novelty prize winners were nearest the pin on the eighth, Corné the 11th, and Thokozane Dladla and Richard Cameron at the 12th.

Well done to all the weekend winners, and to Corné Stevens and Tracy Nel for organising another well-run Juana Maria golf day.
