Rugby is a popular sport, watched and supported by many here in South Africa, but it can be a very demanding profession and difficult to get into.
The Estcourt News had the pleasure of meeting with Johan Wagenaar, who is a 24-year-old rugby player, playing for a Spanish team called the Aparejadores Rugby Burgos coached by David Morros and Alvaro Gonzalez.

Mr Wagenaar is the son of Paul and Dalray Wagenaar who own a business in Estcourt called Ultra Badge and Metal. He is the youngest of three siblings with an older sister named Nadia and brother Hansie.
Mr Wagenaar graduated from Bethlehem Voortrekker High School in 2011, where he played rugby and cricket. The 24-year-old started playing rugby at the tender age of six. His dedication to sport saw him progress to being selected for Academy Week during his matric year.
It was there his fortune changed as he caught the eye of a rugby scout who offered him a contract, which he signed immediately. Part of his contract includes; a car, flights, accommodation, his work visa and medical aid.
To keep his body healthy and fit for all matches you may spot Mr Wagenaar gyming and getting in extra practice; ensuring his body is working properly.

Another one of his secrets to a great game is a balanced diet, which he claims can seriously make the difference.
Right before a big game Mr Wagenaar enjoys taking a few moments of silence and listening to music to get into ‘the zone’. The young gentleman doesn’t stick to a set routine and enjoys constantly changing things up and trying new techniques.
When asked to define rugby the only words he could come to were:
“Friendships, discipline and hard work.”
Being sure to elaborate on how hard work is the key to success, mentioning the value of working towards what you’ve achieved. During off season when Mr Wagenaar is not on the field you may spot him on our local golf course swinging some clubs or at the gym getting in shape for the next season.
If he is not doing anything athletic, you may find this young shopaholic checking out the latest pair of shoes or perhaps catching up with his family, who he is extremely close with.
When looking to keep in touch with this young busy-body, you can find him posting regularly on his Instagram; @wagenaarJohan or on his Facebook; Johan Dunlop Wagenaar. If you are looking to see what he is doing with his team you can follow them on Instagram using @ubucolinaclinicrugby or on Facebook; Aarejadores Rugby Burgos.
