SOCCER: Newcastle Legends take on double opposition
On September 8, Legends travel to the Phoenix area of Durban to take on Phoenix and Verulam in another thrilling double header.
Newcastle Legends did double duty at the weekend.
The team first took on a senior team from Merewent, Durban, in an early afternoon match characterised by strong offense and poor finishing.

Legends began the match on the attack.
As the time ticked on however, Merewent found its rhythm and began to launch a number of stellar counterattacks, denied only by the Legends’ goalie.
“In the second half, Legends looked for the winner but squandered changes in the goal box,” explained Legends’ Mervyn Maharaj.
Merewent eventually went into defense mode and played for the draw, while Legends became desperate to sink a goal.
The visitors then caught the locals napping.
“Merewent caught Legends on the counter; the strike only had the goalkeeper to beat but he managed a brilliant save.”
Thus the game ended in a goalless draw.
In the second match against Newlands, Legends played a far more strategic game and found the back of the net within the first five minutes.
Three minutes later, the team was gifted a penalty kick.

“The Newlands defender fouled the Legends striker and Legends scored from there.”
Shortly before the half time break, Legends eased off the pedal and allowed an opportunity for Newlands to score from a corner kick.
The match went to 2-1 at the break.
When the teams came back onto the pitch, Newlands changed the game plan and pushed its numbers forward in search of an equaliser.
However, Legends had waited for this chance.
“Legends capitalised on the counterattack and scored multiple times, taking the score to 6-1 at full time.”
