Fly fishing success for Estcourt’s William Gilbert in Poland
William was drawn to fish off against the European champion who is the World Champion and the winner of this competition
William Gilbert left for Poland on July 28 with five other team members from the fly fishing team from South Africa, a manager and coach.
They arrived in Poland and set up home with a guide from Poland. He coached the team and helped them get used to the different fishing in the area.

After a week of practice, they headed up to the competition waters at Myczkowce to the World 17th Corland Youth Fly Fishing Championships.
Teams were allowed one day to practice in the local rivers. The opening ceremony and prize giving were live on the internet, so family and friends could watch.
They also had live cameras on a few sectors and viewers were able to see fish being caught live.
The competition was tough.

William was drawn to fish off against the European champion who is the World Champion and the winner of this competition. During most sessions, William was placed fifth.
The weather was hot in the high 30’s and the water below 10 degrees.
William’s final placing was 33rd at the end of the competition. His parents, Dave and Kerry, are very proud of his achievements and know he has the ability to climb the ladder next year. He was one of the younger competitors at 17, and still has two years to fish for the under 19 team.
Team Manager Evert said: “William worked really hard, was rock solid during this trip and we are proud of him. William was placed second highest for the SA team.”

Arriving home mid-August, William said the experience in Poland was absolutely amazing.
