The ‘medicine’ for all golfers

The cold front moved in over the club on Friday evening and with much of the chit-chat to do with “will there be rain or not”, the kitchen was busy feeding the patrons.

As has been proven in the past, the weather is about as unpredictable as the favourite in the July horse race, so it was no surprise that on Saturday, we saw all four seasons in one day.

This tied in nicely with our sponsor, The Coffee Shop, with everyone preferring a hot cuppa of the magical bean.

Golf and coffee have, over the years, been closely intertwined.

Coffee has many attributes that are vital to any golfer, such as increasing concentration and energy levels.

It also offers protection against Alzheimer’s, which we know many golfers have when counting how many shots they played. It also is a relaxant and reduces blood pressure, which some say is what golf can do for one.

However, this does not apply to all concerned, as there are some who will over boil and blow off steam while their pressure rises.

Coffee plays an important part in the daily lives of the human race, so much so that it has been said that the greatest office communication system ever invented was “the coffee break”.

Due to the fact that one cannot drink coffee at the office all day, the concept of the coffee shop was born and this was also the first form of social networking, where friends and business people met to discuss the local or world events, or just gossiped.

As the cold and rain dissipated, it saw the emergence of the sun and warmer conditions, which Rafael Mvelase and Steve Dixon took full advantage of and finished on 48 points to win The Coffee Shop Day.

Corné Daval and Retief Marais finished in second spot, with Jaco Erasmus and Merle Wessels in third.

Gerald Boardman and Ledley were the only two-club winners and shared a healthy pot. Gerald also took two ‘nearest the pin’ prizes at the 3rd and the 12th, with Gary Beaton at the 8th and Rory Sanders on the 11th being the other winners.
