SPORT REPORT: Bowlers soar during robin play

Douglas’s team then rallied to be only two shots behind with one head to play.

Newcastle Bowling Club hosted its Men’s and Women’s Trips competition last weekend.

Despite it being a long weekend, a pleasing number of entries were received.

The four women’s teams played each other in a round robin format, which proved to be a close affair with all teams winning at least one game.

The eventual winners were Alice Howe, Tara Hartman and Mart Browning (4 + 23), with Michelle Steele, Marie Botha and Edith Pretorius (4 + 1) as runners-up.

Two sections of four teams each made up the men’s competition, and after three rounds the winners of Section A were Ron Howe, Mike Hartman and Hennie Schnetler, and of Section B Douglas Steele, Gert Roos and Alex Zaal.
In the final, Douglas’s team got off to a good start and after the fourth end led 5 – 1.

The next six ends however, saw Ron’s team dominating to surge to a comfortable 13 – 6 lead on the 10th end.

Douglas’s team then rallied to be only two shots behind with one head to play.

In a dramatic final end, Douglas, Gert and Alex scored four shots to take the lead and annex the Trips title 16 – 14.

It was most pleasing to see a bank of spectators watching the men’s final – well done all.

A fun-filled bingo evening will be held this Friday evening at the club, and members are encouraged to participate.

A tabs-in meat competition held on Heritage Day (September 24) was won by Ron Howe, Hennie Schnetler and Martie Pepler, the latter two also winning as the best dressed male and female player respectively.

Women’s Trips winners: Mart Browning, Koen Pretorius (club president), Alice Howe, Tara Hartman and Vicky van der Merwe (competition secretary).
