Runners race with grace at Newcastle Harriers festive fun run

Newcastle Harriers pulled out all the stops for its festive fun run last Wednesday afternoon.
Club member Elsa Grundlingh was ecstatic at welcoming more than 100 runners at the club’s first fun run in approximately three years.

Runners were encouraged to donate toys before setting off on the route, with the result being three loads of toys collected for children’s homes in the Newcastle area.
“Each person who finished received a medal and also gets sweets from Santa Claus,” said Grundlingh.
The course was a four kilometre circuit from the Newcastle Swimming Pool up to the base of Signal Hill, and serious competitors could do the route twice for a total distance of 8km.
Unfortunately, the blazing sun made this a tough task for some athletes. Nevertheless, it was an enjoyable outing, said one of the local competitors and hoped it will lead to more events in the future.
