Regional soccer league kicks off again
The afternoon’s second match pitted Newcastle Heroes FC against St Kates FC, a game characterised by aggressive play and more goal poaching. It was the visitors in St Kates who first rattled the net.
The 2018/2019 South African Football Association (SAFA) Amajuba SAB League resumed on Sunday after a two-week festive season break.
Matches began with a bang, with teams vying to lead their respective streams, with the opening matches in Stream C taking place at Sekusile High School.

There hosts Khananites FC first locked horns with Galela United.
In the first 15 minutes of the game, the Khananite players dominated with goal poaching Tsoro in jersey 9 breaking loose often, but his finishing left much to be desired.
In response, the visitors’ defence was tight and aggressive although rough play by the Galela goalkeeper on opposition strikers, resulted in a penalty for the hosts in the 25th minute, with the shooter’s kick being blocked.
With the half-time score locked at nil-nil, both teams set out in the second half to find the elusive goal and break the deadlock. This was not to be and the match ended in a goalless draw.

Heroes regrouped well with a focused attack resulting in the equaliser by the 30th minute.

St Kates dominated affairs in the second stanza of the match, but most of the scoring attempts were killed off before even reaching the goal area.
A golden opportunity presented itself with only 10 minutes left on the clock and Heroes utilised its chance to claim victory by two goals to one.
The remaining match took place at the Arbor Park Grounds. Hosts Newcastle Sporting FC faced a tough challenge from fellow locals Newcastle Warriors FC, a team focused on scoring goals.
The Warriors attack was led by Bazooka Shabalala and Nkululeko Nxumalo.
These talented strikers led from the front, with Bazooka scoring twice and Nkululeko netting the third and final goal of the encounter.
Sporting scored a consolation goal to end the match 3 – 1 down.
