Horseback riders saddle up at SA Championships

Young members of the KwaZulu-Natal Equestrian Tentpegging Union (KZN ETU) competed in the South African Tentpegging Championships in Bethlehem in December 2018.

This competition took place over two days.

It was a fierce contest between 116 junior riders representing all nine South African provinces, and at a special prize-giving function.

The following KZN ETU riders were selected for national teams:

Protea Team:
Danielle du Plessis of Majuba Tentpegging Club made the girls’ team while Jan-Hendrick Prinsloo (also of Majuba) made the boys’ team.
President Team:
Majuba Tentpegging Club’s Bianca Louw was chosen for the girls’ team and Zander Steyn of Vryheid Landbou Tentpegging Club was picked for the boys’ team.

Under-14 Girls Team: Chloe Redman (Okusha Tentpegging Club) and Danica Schnuir (Normandien Tentpegging Club) were selected for the team.

Development Team:
Joshua Schnuir from Normandien Tentpegging Club made the team. Members of this team are selected from among all first-time riders at the SA Championships.

The seven aforementioned riders will participate in the Tentpegging Youth Festival on March 23 in Newcastle, where they will be awarded their national colours.

The Inter-Provincial Tournament took place on December 13.

Despite some stern competition, the KZN teams all rode well and achieved a third place finish at the end of the competition.

The tournament grand totals were as follows:

Northern Cape finished in first place with 1 653 points, followed by Free State on 1 604 points and KZN on 1 267 points.

“We are very proud of all our riders, who took part in both the SA Championships and the Inter-Provincial Tournament,” said KZN ETU representatives.
