Bongani to take on the Two Oceans
Bongani will now compete in his very first Two Oceans Marathon and experience Cape Town for the very first time as well
Dreams do come true and for Bongani Sabela, that dream of competing in the Two Oceans Marathon is now a reality.
Two weeks ago, the Courier featured Bongani’s plea for donations to go to Cape Town for the marathon.

Bongani wasn’t scheduled to run the Two Oceans, but after a teammate was injured, Bongani took his place. And so began a quest to raise the funds for Bongani, a quest which even garnered international support. Within the two weeks, money was raised to make Bongani’s dreams come true. For club chairperson, Lani van der Mescht, it was amazing to see the support they received.
“We are extremely happy for Bongani as he will travel to Cape Town for the first time on the Easter Weekend and compete in the 56km Two Oceans Marathon. We want send a very special thank you to RA Burns, Shane Hilliar, Debbie Sharp, Martie Gropp, Jackie Le Grange and Joost Bekkers for making this possible for him!”
Mr Bekkers, a Dutch national read the article on the Northern Natal Courier website and immediately contacted the Courier to assist with funding. Mr Bekker explained that he ran the marathon last year and wanted to do so again this year.
He then began searching Google for news on the Two Oceans when he came across the article about Bongani and decided that he too, would assist turn the dream into a reality.
A speechless Bongani could not believe that one man, who has never met him before, would donate money towards his cause.
Bongani will now compete in his very first Two Oceans Marathon and experience Cape Town for the very first time as well. And while he’s excited at the thought of making new memories, he’s also focused on showing everyone what Dundee’s Ironman can do.
