Spinners secure Molls victory

Molls' run chase also got off to a rocky start as they lost wickets quite frequently

Molls and Tigers contested a tight 30 over game at the Oval on Saturday, with Molls securing a hard-fought victory.

Tigers batted first and were rocked early, losing two quick wickets. At the end of the third over, Tigers were already 9 runs for the loss of 2 wickets. Keagan Naicker and Akeel Singh then got together in the middle and anchored the innings.

Keagan Naicker was in fine form.

At the halfway stage in their innings, Tigers were 84-2 and looking strong.

But after the break, Molls brought on the spinners, who slowly killed of the game.

Akeel Singh was dismissed after playing a few lofty shots, just short of his 50.

Henry Liversage and Zandre Coetzer took pace off the ball and gave Tigers’ batsmen nothing to work with. Akeel was soon dismissed, scoring 46 runs and bringing to an end an 81 run partnership. Keagan’s wicket fell two overs later with the score on 105 and the rest of the batting line-up followed soon after.

With two players short, Tigers only had nine available batsmen and were bowled out for 134. Akeel top scored with 46 while Keagan chipped in with a handy 39.

Tigers’ batsman, Vernen Naicker had a tough time negotiating a few balls which kept low.

Henry finished with figures of 4/17 from 5.3 overs while Zandre took 2/16 from 4 overs.

Molls’ run chase also got off to a rocky start as they lost wickets quite frequently. At the start of the sixth over, they were languishing at 16-3. Henry and Wilfred Bierbaum then put on a 29 run partnership before Henry was dismissed. Jan-Frederick van Zyl and Wilfred then put on a 32 run partnership, keeping them on the right track.

Wilfred Bierbaum helped steady the ship after a mini collapse.

When Wilfred was caught on the boundary by Vernen Naicker, Molls were 77/5, in the 14th over.

Corne Coetzee came to the wicket and together with Jan-Frederick, they saw Molls home with one ball to spare. Jan-Frederik finished on 43 not out while Corne finished on 33 not out.

Jan-Frederik top scored for Molls.

Tigers, despite taking the game to the last over, were left to rue their wayward bowling. They conceded 25 runs in just extras, bowling 18 wides and 5 no balls.

Shaun took 1 wicket for 15 runs in 5 overs and Shervive took 3 wickets for 41 in his 5, but it was not enough to save them from defeat.
