Soccer legends lose their footing in muddy match

Newcastle Legends hosted Estcourt Masters in a Golden Soccer League clash on Saturday (April 6).
Friday night’s rain left the pitch waterlogged, but this did not deter the two teams, which were both eager to claim victory. Masters settled in quickly and began to pressurise the Legends’ defence, attacking from both flanks and pinning the home team in its own half for much of the first quarter.
Legends’ defence and goalkeeper were well up to the challenge though.
Manager for the day, Premie Singh noticed his midfield was struggling and put on the experienced Vincent Muthoo (Baba) to control the game.
At the stroke of half time however, Masters’ perseverance paid off.
Legends players seemed to have a lapse in concentration, which allowed its Estcourt rivals to move into the lead.
In the second half, Masters continued its assault.
Legends then had a golden opportunity, when Akesh Dewlall carried the ball from the halfway line and beat two Masters defenders, leaving only the goalie in the way of the back of the net.
Sadly, the muddy pitch came to Masters’ rescue.
Dewlall lost his footing on the churned-up turf and slipped, sending the ball wide of the goal and letting the Estcourt visitors off the hook temporarily.
Legends had to dig deep, and find a way to change the game.
Then disaster struck, with Legends losing Dewlall to a hamstring injury and with no other options, Singh made some quick changes to the team formation.
To assist Phillip van Blerk up front, he added Mervyn Maharaj and Baba.
Although the trio came close to scoring the elusive equaliser on three occasions in the final 10 minutes, Lady Luck did not smile on Legends.
The final score was 1 – 0 to the visitors from Estcourt.
On April 13 at 1pm, Legends will host Inanada FC and KwaMashu Legends, and encourages all its supporters to turn up for the game and lend their voices.
The team continues to practise on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Paradise Grounds.
