Highlanders hands Volksrust 88-14 thrashing –

Newcastle Boschpick Highlanders proverbially ‘wiped the floor’ with Volksrust Rugby Club on Saturday (April 30). The local rugby side won the friendly by a convincing 88 points to 14.

According to the coach of Highlanders, Andrè ‘Swannie’ Swanepoel, it was a nail-biting match. Despite this, the Newcastle team took a 40-7 lead by the end of the first half.

Highlanders scored 14 tries, thanks to substitute wing, Jaco Laing (22) and centre, Nipho Ntshangase (13),” said Swanepoel.

He further stated that the Highlanders’ spread in the backline was just too much for Volksrust. The backs were responsible for 13 of the 14 total tries scored during the match.

Swanepoel commended his forward pack for excellent passing skills to the speedy backline.

He was impressed by the pace of Shaka Nkosi (15) and said Gift Mabaso’s (12) game management skills were excellent. Highlanders captain, Daniel Halforty (2) was also said to have played well.

Swanepoel said lock, Oman (5) was the most outstanding forward of the day.

Tries were scored by the following players:

  • Laing and Ntshangase scored three tries each
  • Dyke (14) and Moyane (11) scored two tries each
  • Gift, Halforty, James (23) and Shaka each scored one try.

We want to thank Volksrust Rugby Club for committing to this game over a long weekend. We were happy to just play the game.”

Highlanders will begin its league campaign on Saturday (May 7), facing Witbank away in the first Mpumalanga Super League encounter.

Highlanders III will take on Volksrust this Friday (May 6) at the Arbor Park Sports Grounds. The match begins at 19:00 and all Covid-19 regulations are to be followed.
