12-year-old fishing fanatic casts out and reels ’em in

Matteo is the youngest member in the Umtshezi Angling Club

People do different things for fun…

Some like having a relaxed day with their families and some ‘chill’ with friends on a night out, but 12-year-old Matteo Sukdea likes spending most of his spare time fishing with his dad.

This Forderville Primary School learner is a member of Umtshezi Angling Club and simply adores fishing. He joined the club last year, but has been fishing ever since he was two years old! Matteo recalls his first league last year when he caught three huge carp and won first place all by himself.

“I was on top of the world when I received a floating trophy and a certificate from the league. I thought to myself: I could get used to this!” exclaimed Matteo.

A recent fishing trip he went on was tons of fun, as he learnt even more ‘tricks of the trade’ from his dad. Matteo managed to yet again score big and win.

He is currently the youngest angler in the club and holds second position in the league with 26 points on the scoreboard.

Matteo was inspired by his late uncle, Vino, who taught him how to fish. Even though he misses his uncle very much, he remembers the good times they had together.

“It’s very different now without uncle Vino around and I really do miss him.” His mum describes Matteo as a caring and loving individual.

“He is responsible and aims to achieve any given task given to him. “As his mother, I am extremely proud of him. “When he grows up, he wishes to pursue a career in mechanical engineering.” Responding to his mother’s comment, a smiling Matteo said, “I certainly do see myself as a pilot!”
