The SA Post Office has confiscated various letters for international processing which are franked with fraudulent postage stamps.
The stamps are laser-printed on a glossy paper and the perforation is of poor quality. The colours are also very different from the original.
The original stamps are printed on high-quality stamp paper with L-shaped phosphorus tagging. The phosphorus ink cannot be imitated by regular printing and is detected by automatic sorting machines.
Items franked with fraudulent postage stamps are sent to the Post Office’s Returned Letter Office. If they are unclaimed after six months, the paper is shredded and sold to be recycled.
