Over a thousand lives lost on roads

Festive season road accidents claim 1184 lives

JOBURG- According to the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) 1184 people lost their lives on South African roads from 1 to 30 December.

These deaths come as a result of 987 reported road accidents across South African provinces. KwaZulu-Natal came in first place with 205 accidents, with Gauteng following in close second with 156.

The figure is expected to rise when most holiday makers will return home in the New Year.

RTMC spokesperson Thato Mosena said many accidents occurred on secondary routes which motorists travelled on to avoid toll fees and traffic officers.

Factors contributing to the high rate of accidents on our roads include reckless driving, blatant disrespect and anti-social conduct.
