School set to open soon
The Gauteng Department of Education promises that school will be ready to open this month.
North Riding Secondary School was set to open on 12 December 2013, but due to damage caused by a storm, the school will now open on 15 January.
In the beginning of December last year, heavy rains caused part of the sports grounds to collapse. Ward 115 councillor Chris Santana explained, “The construction workers never compressed the ground around the stand which was also the cause of the collapse. Drainage at the school is an issue as the rainwater has nowhere to flow after heavy storms.”
The Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson Phumla Sekhonyane said, “The contractors are currently fixing this and putting in a bigger storm water channel that will withstand heavy rainstorms. At present all is on track to open the school on 15 January.”
Santana added that the Johannesburg Roads Agency still needs to widen Bellairs Drive to help with the increased traffic that the new school will generate.
He said, “A traffic light will be installed on Bellairs Drive and a traffic circle will help to slow down traffic close to the drop-off zone.”
