A passion for music

Louis Fourie's legal career might have ended, but his music notes have not.

Despite being in education and law, Linden choir leader Louis Fourie’s love for music never died.

It was a love that flamed up at university again. ”When I was in school I also played the piano, but I was always upset when the other lads could play while I had to practise.” He was born in Reitz in the Free State and studied education at the University of the Free State. Later he decided to leave education and went back to university to study law. He had a legal practice for many years.

The 81-year-old and his wife Susan now live in Ruimsig after residing in Robin Hills, Randburg.

After Fourie retired as a lawyer he started the choir in 2009. ”I had a post as an organist at the Gereformeerde Kerk in Linden,” he said. “We consist of so many professions in our choir. Teachers, lawyers and even journalists.”

The choir currently needs new members. ”The more we can get, the nicer it would be. We practise twice a week at the Gereformeerde Kerk. Our first performance will be in March.”

Every year he composes a new Passion to perform over the Easter period.

In 2009 the choir performed the Lukaspassie (Lucas Passion), that is about the announcement of the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem until his crucifixion.

In 2010 the choir performed Jerusalem based on Revelations 21 in the Bible. This productions were performed at various congregations in Johannesburg. A CD recording of Jerusalem was also produced. In 2011 Fourie composed Gloria that was performed in Latin.

Fourie composed Die Matteus Passie (Matthew Passion) for this year.
