Crime hotspot

Sundowner residents said he is tired of the crime which takes place on the bush corner Drysdale Road, and Olievenhout Avenue.

Sundowner resident Pat Naidoo and other residents are fed up with the crime in the area especially incidents that often take place on the corner of Drysdale Road and Olievenhout Avenue.

“The criminals operate in this area very bravely with little regard for the law or anyone else,” said Naidoo. “These robbers then escape into a vacant plot that is covered by bush, where they hide for a short while only to return and repeat this routine until they are satisfied with their takings. My neighbours and I have regularly witnessed this sort of crime.”

Naidoo is adamant that police have not done enough to alleviate the situation and when called often arrive too late to effect any arrests.

One of the contributing factors to the high crime rate is an abandoned house where criminals have become regulars. The vacant plot into which the robbers escape is bordering an adjoining park. “I believe that a woman was almost raped in the area. Fortunately a concerned and brave neighbour scared the criminals away and saved the woman from a terrible fate.”

Naidoo said the police should put up notices warning the public of criminal activities in the area.

Douglasdale police spokesperson Warrant Officer Balan Muthan said the police patrolled all hotspots regularly. “People need to report the crimes that happen, whether you are a victim or witness you need to report all cases so it is easier for the police to attend to the case,” said Muthan.
