Domestic workers as well as gardeners are being targeted when walking to and from work late in the afternoon.
Hot spot areas include Pritchard Street, Church Street in Johannesburg North, and Bellairs Drive in North Riding.
According to Sector 1 Community Policing Forum (CPF) chairman Margaret van Zwieten, the attacks usually take place during the week from 6pm to 8.30pm.
“We have also had an incident where a white bakkie stopped next to two domestic workers. Three occupants got out of the vehicle and started to assault one of the workers. The suspects then took the victim’s cellphone and wallet,” van Zwieten said.
Van Zwieten stated that the Douglasdale police Sector 1 Neighbourhood Watch is now patrolling the streets, but needs more volunteers. “Anyone interested in getting involved please contact the forum.”
Douglasdale Police Station spokesperson Colonel Tinus Swart said, “We have been guarding all areas, especially during the times when the domestic workers go to work and when they go home. Should anyone see a suspicious vehicle or person, they must report them to the police immediately. Victims of any crime must also have their cases reported. This makes it easier for us to track the suspects.”
