Fresh as a DJ

DJ Fresh shares his business stragey and music history.

Randpark Ridge resident Thato Sikwane better known as DJ Fresh is one of South Africa’s legendary DJs who’s skills are respected worldwide.

Fresh’s love for music began at a very early age. In high school he would be the life of the party with his cassette tapes. “It all started as a hobby, I didn’t really think it would be something I would end up doing professionally,” said Fresh.

He began his music career at a radio station in Botswana, but later moved to South Africa. Thereafter he studied at Boston Media House and auditioned for a job at YFM, becoming a resident DJ at the station.

After a decade at YFM, Fresh accepted an offer to work at Five FM. Over the years his music has articulately evolved from one style to another, creating a fusion of kwaito, house, electro and dub-step music, which he simply describes as happy music.

“My aim is to create timeless music,” he said. “When a person listens to my music 10 years from now, I want my music to still mean something to them.”

His biggest accomplishment is staying relevant after being in the industry for more than 15 years. “I have witnessed many artists come and go. I therefore believe it is a huge accomplishment to still have people support my work.” He believes his success is due to taking his job seriously and being professional.

Fresh advised people who would like to be in the DJ industry or follow in his footsteps, to always remember who their target market was, and focus on ensuring that particular market was pleased with your production.
