Taxi wait no longer boring
Entertaining clips to be shown on large screen at the Randburg Taxi Rank.
The three-by-seven metre high definition screen at the Randburg taxi rank was switched on at the beginning of March.
The screen, which is apparently the first of its kind in a taxi rank in South Africa, will show short, entertaining clips and advertisements. It will also show live soccer games from May, just in time for the 2014 FIFA World Cup starting on 12 June.
Media Sync Co-owner Tshepo Mofokeng said when the screen was switched on people stopped to watch it. “Everyone was intrigued,” he said. “On average people wait 15 minutes to catch a taxi. The short entertaining clips will help people pass the time.”
The screen will not have audio as the sound will clash with the loud noise that already emanates from the taxi rank.
Commuter Matshepo Chiloane said it would be awkward watching the clips without sound while Noli Muhanelwa, who owns a store at the rank, said she was looking forward to watching the entertainment clips.
One taxi driver, who wished to remain anonymous, said he was busy and did not think he would have time to watch anything.
Johannes Rammala, business marketing officer of the Northern Taxi Liasson Committee, said the screen would make it easier for many people to watch soccer matches.
