Brave five-year-old fights off alleged kidnapper

RANDBURG – Attackers beat dog unconscious and attempt to kidnap children in Golden Harvest Park.

What was meant to be a peaceful walk in the park turned into a nightmare for a mother from Sharonlea on 4 June.

The mother who has chosen not to reveal her name in order to protect her family, took her two-year-old son and her five-year-old nephew to Golden Harvest Park, in Northgate, to feed the ducks as she has done for the last four years.

She took her large boerboel dog with her and the children as a safety measure.

Upon entering the park, they were approached by a man holding a knife. She cautioned the man not to come closer, as her dog would attack if he did. However, the warning was ignored and the man lunged at the dog, punching the dog until it lay there unconscious.

The attacker then turned his aggression on the mother, beating her repeatedly, before he grabbed both boys by the neck and began running off with the screaming children.

The mother ran after him and grabbed at his legs and held on while he dragged her on the ground attempting to get away. She sustained severe bruising from this.

The five-year-old managed to punch the attacker and also kick him in the groin, at which point he dropped the children and ran away.

Honeydew police have not yet confirmed the incident. Updates and official comment to follow.
