Bryanston Primary will be hosting their annual ‘Tickey’ Afternoon again on 30 August, and they would like to invite all Randburg residents to come join in the fun.
“Tickey Afternoon began in the early ’60s when South Africa still used the monetary system of pounds, shillings and pence,” explained Tania Roman, who teaches at the school.
“The Grade 7s organised this mini-fête and each stall charged a ‘tickey’ to participate in their events. As you might have gathered, inflation had not yet set in and for a ‘tickey’, you could actually purchase something of value.”
The idea behind the day was to enable the Grade 7s to give the school a gift by which they could be remembered.
“And also to give something back to the school as a special thanks for all that had been done for them during their years there,” Roman continued.
Tickey Afternoon is no longer simply a fundraising event. It is an educational exercise in co-operation, compromise, planning, how to run meetings, note taking and basic economic skills.
“Organising their own activities encourages pupils to use their own ideas and initiative. Contributions by individuals and companies have also ensured the success of this tradition,” she concluded enthusiastically. “It’s an event not to be missed.”
The event will be held on 30 August from 12pm to 4pm on the school’s Hedding Field and entrance is free.
