GALLERY: New five-a-side netball now in Randburg

RANDBURG – Founder invites everyone to join the exciting new sport of five-a-side netball at Old Parks.

The Old Parks Netball five-a-side opened its doors on 18 April by hosting try-outs for the social teams at the new Fast Five Arena inside Old Parks.

Anthony Yates, who is involved with the new form of netball says, it is unique and is one of two five-a-side netball games that takes place in Gauteng. “There is another five-a-side arena in Pretoria and that is the only other one that I’m aware of.”

Yates explained that the fast-five is a faster format of netball that features shortened games and goals worth multiple points. This games has been developed for a new international netball competition – the World Netball Series.

“Each side only has five players on the court and every quarter lasts only six minutes compared to 15 minutes in competitions. Teams are also allowed to use rolling substitution with no stoppages in play per substitution and with unlimited substitutions per quarter.”

He continued, “Each team can separately nominate one ‘power play’ quarter in which each goal scored by that team counts for double points. The goal shooter and goal attack can shoot goals from outside the shooting circle. Goals usually count for two points if scored from inside the outer zone and three points if scored in the super shot zone – however, they would count for four and six points respectively, during power play.”

Yates added that after each goal – the team that concedes, takes the next centre pass; teams alternate by taking the first centre pass of each quarter. Tied games are decided by penalty shoot-outs similar to those in association football.

“We are currently busy with a social league, youth and adult leagues as well as a competitive league. People are more then welcome to join us.”
