The woman behind the outfits
NORTHGATE – Meet the brains behind the costumes of a big upcoming performance.
Costume designer Vanessa Leuck reveals what inspired her to create the outfits she did for the upcoming Disney on Ice Let’s Celebrate show. The performance will be held at the Coca-Cola Dome from 26 June to 6 July. Leuck has been busy finding inspiration for all the costumes, from the lowly zombies to the main characters, such as Mickey or Captain Hook.
“The costumes are very different and display a wide variety of looks,” she says. “They are whimsical, colourful, sparkly, eclectic and representative of different celebrations and moods.” As the show is dedicated to the spirits of celebration and Mickey and Mini’s journey around the world, Leuck had to be creative. She said, “I noticed the colours that were important for each cultural celebration, and put the images I collected together with the music from the show.”
Leuck explains that the Chinese New Year is fast-paced with bold colours. “For Carnival, the male performers were inspired by the exotic parrots in South America and from nature, so they wear real feathers, headpieces and masks. The women are traditional Carnival show girls, with a lot of sparkles and feathers. “
